Selling Clutter
Selling Clutter
When pricing items for resale, remember an item is worth only what someone else will pay for it.
Many times our stuff has value to us in addition to its worth. But that value is emotional or historical, not financial. Once you have made the decision to sell, emotions need to be removed from the pricing equation
You can hire an appraiser to do a walk-through inspection to identify items worth a closer look. A true expert should know when an item isn’t worth appraising. The American Society of Appraisers reports fees range from $100-$200.
If you don’t want to pay for a full appraisal but want to know whether it has significant value – contact auctioneer, consignment shop or dealer. For common items eBay and Craigslist reflect local markets. Remember to check the sold price, not the asking price.
Realize that online catalogs might list item for one value, but if you want to sell it yourself, you won’t get anywhere near that.
