Repurpose memories – Part 1
Many people have to cope with clutter in their closets. But there comes a point where clothing turns into memorabilia. Perhaps it is from a departed family member, symbolizes your adventurous youth, or is the dress you got married in. These articles are not to wear, but because contain precious memories of you past.
The first task is determine that these articles are no longer kept as articles of clothing. Once that is decided, what part of them is truly important as memorabilia? Is it the entire shirt, or the pattern or image. Does seeing that particular iridescent purple rayon or pink taffeta bring back all the memories? Now it is time to think outside the box. Here are a few ideas.
Memory Bears are teddy bears made from clothing and belongings with sentimental value to you. Fur coats, neckties, uniforms, t shirts, pants, blankets, jewelry, buttons and more. Memory Bears are usually made in remembrance of a loved one. During times of loss and grief, they can offer great comfort. Below find a pretty thorough tutorial on making your own.
Another way to repurpose your clothing is to turn it into a quilt. Use just the images from t-shirts or scraps from a variety of pieces. These quilts can then be used on beds or as cool wall hangings.
Scraps of fabric can be glued or decoupaged around frames or shadow boxes (think bridesmaids dress around photo from wedding, prom dress or pieces from a tie).
Rather than having these fabric items remain hidden in drawers or closets, get creative in repurposing. This allows you to access and share your memories more easily, while also reducing clutter. Consider checking out sites like pinterest – look for “upcycle”, “memories”, “keepsake”…
There are many people available, if you are not comfortable doing the work yourself. You can find a seamstress, crafty friend, or vendor to follow your directions.
